What If No One Is Reading?
(And Why You Should Keep Blogging Anyway)
You sit down, pour your heart into a blog post, hit publish… and it’s quiet. No likes. No comments. No email notifications. Just… silence. If you’ve ever wondered why you’re even bothering, or thought, “what’s the point if no one’s reading?”, you’re not alone. Every blogger, especially those writing personal stories, goes through this. But here’s the truth: your words still matter, even in the quiet. Sometimes especially in the quiet.
Why It Feels Like No One’s Reading
First, growing a personal blog takes time. It can take awhile for search engines and your audience to find you. And personal stories aren’t “click bait”, so growth takes time over a period of weeks and months. It is entirely possible to “go viral” with a blog post, but it’s not something that happens regularly. Also, social media culture makes it so much harder. It’s easy to feel like we’re less than if our numbers aren’t as high as others. And remember the cliche, “don’t compare your beginning with someone else’s middle”!
Why Your Words Still Matter
Even if no one reads today, you’re writing for your future self, your family, or even just your own currently healing and reflection. Blogging can be a long-game, and you don’t know when God will use your words to help someone else, at the exact time they need it. And all this writing? It’s such a good discipline and practice. You will continue to grow in your ability to share well, encourage, and reflect…and that’s valuable whether 10 people or 1000 people are reading.
I was talking about this just a few days ago with my husband, sharing that I wasn’t always sure if I should keep going because not many were reading or seeing what I had to offer. He said very succintly, “So what? You’re writing for you, and it’s important. Period”. I’m thinking about getting that printed on a sign to put next to my desk as a daily reminder.
How to Stay Motivated When It’s Quiet
- Write for one person: imagine the one reader who needs your story.
- Share your posts in small ways with friends, in a group, or on social media.
- Celebrate small wins of a comment, a share, or a personal breakthrough.
- Set a realistic goal of one post a week or month, not perfection.
You can also explore other ways to get the word out. Join an online writers group, add your link to your email signature and make sure it’s on your profile on social media. Learn a little about SEO and practice crafting your titles so they are more “searchable”, And don’t be afraid to actually TELL people about your blog.
Ultimately, your blog and your story are valuable. Even if only you and God are seeing your work right now. Don’t give up because it’s quiet. Just keep moving forward through the stillness and silence.
