What Does “Sharing Your Story” really Mean?
When I say “share your story,” I’m not just talking about writing a memoir or telling your whole life from start to finish (although you COULD certainly do that). I’m talking about choosing pieces of your life, your experiences and sharing them in a way that connects with others. And hopefully in this process you also grow and heal.
When you write your stories, they can be short or long, simple or deep, creative or ordinary! There are so many parts of our overall story and we can share the joy, the pain, the raw, the funny, the faith-filled… and so much more!
At its core, sharing your story means:
- Letting others see who you are and what shaped you.
- Using your voice to encourage, inspire, or simply say “me too.”
- Offering your perspective or lessons from your journey.
It’s not about being a perfect writer, but more about being real. It’s like opening your front door a little and inviting someone to sit with you for a moment.
What Can “Your Story” Look Like in Action?
I don’t envision a task-oriented, “sit down and write all the details of your life” type idea. Again, if you’re idea is to write a memoir or true life story, you can certainly do that, but in terms of blogging and sharing, it can be a little more broad and less detail-specific. Here are some ideas of what’s you can “share your story”:
- Personal reflections — “This is what I’ve been through and how I’ve grown.”
- Faith journey — “Here’s how I came to trust God through a hard season.”
- Life lessons — “This is what turning 60 taught me about confidence.”
- Creative process — “Crocheting helped me through grief—here’s why I still do it.”
- Behind-the-scenes — “Why I started painting again after raising kids.”
- Milestone memories — “The day my first grandchild was born changed everything.”
- Everyday moments — “What making coffee every morning reminds me of now.”
- Legacy stories — “My mother taught me this, and I want to pass it on.”
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out how to start, but it can be as simple as:
- “This reminded me of…”
- “Today I noticed something…”
- “I used to think… but now…”

Why It Matters
Sharing your story helps others feel less alone, and helps you see your life with fresh eyes. Sometimes what feels ordinary to you is exactly what someone else needs to hear! You don’t have to be a writer to be a storyteller. You just have to be willing to be seen.
So if you’ve been waiting for the right time, the perfect way, or a sign… consider this your sign.
Start small. Start true. But do start.
